Ali and Tuija Nylund Foundation was founded in 1997 by Tuija Nylund to promote women’s education and status, especially in developing countries. Tuija strongly believed that education is the key to equality and well-being, an idea that continues to shape our activities today.
FOUNDER
Tuija Nylund (1914–2005) was an entrepreneur and a socially engaged woman. She was married to Alfons “Ali” Nylund (1904–1959), who in his youth was a successful football player for HIFK and the Finnish national team. After the war, Ali founded the shipping company Merikiito, which became a significant actor in the sector. The company’s success later formed the financial foundation of the foundation.
After Ali’s death, Tuija continued to run the company. She later transferred her assets to the foundation and served as its chair until her death. Before her passing, she bequeathed her entire estate to the foundation.

MISSION
The purpose of the foundation’s activities is to promote education for economically disadvantaged women from developing countries. The foundation awards scholarships for university studies and provides grants to organisations’ projects that promote women’s education in developing countries. The foundation does not carry out its own education, research, or project activities.

COOPERATION WITH UNIVERSITIES
In the early years of the foundation, the University of Helsinki was a key partner, supporting female students who came to study there with scholarships (primarily Christian female students from developing countries). At that time, the foundation established its own fund within the University of Helsinki Funds, from which scholarships are still awarded in line with the foundation’s objectives.
Fruitful cooperation has also been carried out with, among others, Aalto University and the University of Jyväskylä. In 2015, the foundation’s statutes were amended to allow grants to also be awarded to projects implemented by civil society organisations in developing countries that promote education for girls and women. The foundation thus supports education projects in developing countries with a particular focus on women’s education. The projects are implemented by various organisations, associations, or other actors through local partners.
In addition, the foundation annually awards EUR 5,000 to domestic nature conservation projects in Finland. Among others, the foundation has supported projects carried out by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and the John Nurminen Foundation.

BOARD
The board safeguards the interests of the foundation and ensures that its purpose is fulfilled. The foundation’s board consists of three to four members. The board approves the financial statements and decides on the budget for the following year, the investment policy, and the amounts to be distributed as grants. The principles for appointing board members are defined in the foundation’s statutes.
